Why can’t FCP find my deck?
I’m trying to capture from a Panasonic DV deck to a G-Raid 500G drive. For some reason, FCP can’t see my deck. I’m on a iBook G4, FCP 5.0.4 and using FW 400 between the laptop and drive and FW 800 between the drive and deck. I’ve been using FCP Rescue to trash my prefs every time I close FCP. I have everything set to Non-Controllable device and use Capture Now. I’ve tried every combination of refresh, reboot, reconnect I can think of.
I’m completely out of ideas.
I had this same problem last week, but was working around it. Then I went out of town and when I came back, everything was going great and capturing like clockwork. Yesterday, however, it all quit. I’m really hoping someone can help me out so I can capture the 16 tapes I have left before the borrowed deck has to go back on Monday!

Tried connecting the deck NOT thru the FW 800 connected drive? i.e. directly to a 400 port?

That may work, except that I only have the one 400 port on my iBook. If I use it for the deck, I can’t connect to the drive. Would you suggest capturing locally and then transferring the files to the drive later? Can I do that?

Can you loop the FW 400 connection with the drive? i.e. does it have two FW 400 ports or just one of each?

You could capture to the local drive, then move the media with the media manager (use copy then reconnect before you trash the originals) but that’s a pain…
I’ve got a suspicion that it’s the FW setup you have going on there… might try adding a firewire hub, but that also might cause some problems.. I’ve heard of problems and also heard it works OK..
Only other thing to try that I can think of is to trash your preference files. and give it another go… which deck are you using?

I went ahead and tried it, and your suggestion worked really well. I limited capture now to 30 min so it won’t eat all my memory and then imported the files into my project on the drive. It’ll take a bit longer, but at least it’s working!
The drive has one 400 and two 800 ports, and my laptop only has one 400 port (no 800s), The deck is a Panasonic AG-DV2500 – just the DV out. Once I get everything in, the connections won’t be an issue anymore.

I’ll just bet that the FW 800 and FW 400 ports being on the same unit will cause some problems with looping thru the drive unit… In fact, I’m not sure that if you connect the drive to the CPU via FW 800, then attempt to loop a 400 device through it, just plain won’t work. But if you had FW 800 port for the drive then connected the deck to the 400 port, I’ll bet it works.
