Why am I getting Planar RGB files in FCP?
This may not be an FCP question… but a Photoshop one… not really sure!
I’m getting .psd files from an artist that open properly in PS with all layers intact, but when I import those files in to FCP, they come in as Planar RGB and consequently, the file behaves as a jpeg…. no video layers. I need them to import as a psd sequence (multilayerd psd files)
I’ve tried to duplicate this issue in PS on my end but can’t seem to do it.
What is happening to the files that the artist is sending me, that would make them import as Planar RGB in FCP?

If you open them in photoshop, and re-save them as Photoshop .psd files, do they then retain the layers? Seems to me there was some weird thing like this if the files were saved on a PC instead of a Mac, but not sure about that…

yes, when I re-save his files they import into FCP correctly… w/ layers. He is on a Mac.Incidentally, in FCP, the artists files are identified as having a square pixel aspect ratio, whereas the files I generate from PS show the NTSC – CCIR 601 ratio.
I could re-save each file, but we are dealing with a potentially high number of files… in the thousands. It’d be nice to figure out what he is doing differently… we’ve gone over the file set up pane in PS and we are both creating the same document set up…

Two wild stabs in the dark here:
i) How is he transferring the files to you? If it’s by FTP, maybe a little subtle something is getting screwed up. Try setting up the FTP software to treat all files as binary transfers.
ii) Does he have “Maximize PSD & PSB file Compatibility” turned on in Preferences > File Handling?
I suspect it’s something to do with the way you’re receiving the original files though.
Failing all of that, set up an action in Photoshop to batch process your files, so you don’t have to do anything manually.
