  • Who’s using an MXO 2 with FCP? Increased RT performance?

Posted by Chris Davis on April 13, 2009 at 7:56 pm

Hello. I have a couple questions for those who are using a Matrox MXO 2 with FCP:

I read that one of the features of the MXO 2 is improved RT performance with FCP (quote from Matrox site below). I just got off the phone with Matrox sales, and am still unclear about in what way and how much a MXO 2 increases RT performance with FCP2. I’m not very famular with hardware acceleration devises, so please bear with me…

    1. Does the MXO 2 actually take “weight” off the computer’s CPU, resulting on less red render bars?

    2. Does it accomplish better RT by the Matrox drivers telling FCP that some chips inside the MXO 2 will take care of the some process that FDP would otherwise do (using the CPU)?

    3. About how much better RT would one get with a MXO 2?

    Thanks,
    Chris

    From the Matrox site:
“In Dynamic RT editing mode, Final Cut Pro automatically reduces frame size to let you preview non-realtime segments of your project at a better frame rate. With the MXO2 hardware upscaler, these segments are accelerated to their original frame size saving processing power for other Final Cut Pro operations, so you get better realtime performance.”

All the cards and boxes do this.

What it means is that almost all HD formats are anamorphic. DVCPro HD, HDV, even HDCAM.

AJA, BMD and Matrox products take the scaling off the Mac Processors allowing more realtime effects and filters to be applied to video clips in realtime.

For example, DVCPro HD 720/60 is 960×720 native. FCP scales that out to 1280×720 on the fly during playback. This takes processor power. AJA, BMD and Matrox products do that scaling so the processors can handle filters and effects instead.

It’s just the same for all the products, but they all include it in their marketing materials.

This is true for all the major cards…AJA, Decklink, Matrox. The cards take the SCALING of the anamorphic clips off the processor, enabling it to do slightly more RT. But none add real hardware acceleration like the Matrox RT does on the PC side.

Or like the CineWave did four years ago!

I know many people still using FCP 3 and the Cinewave on their G4’s. Hey, if it works…

Still the only way to output “real” realtime Chroma Key directly to tape, zero rendering. I still miss that to this day…..

I was grateful to the one person who respond before, but did not get the sense that he had direct experience with the combo. When no one else chimed in, I noticed that the Matrox part of this site does not get nearly as much traffic as the FCP section, so I reposted several days later. None the less, I should have made reference to the fact that I had asked the question on another part of this site.

If you are saying that Andy’s answer is completely accurate, that does help.

    Thanks,
    Chris

He was spot on. That is why I didn’t chime in. If someone answers the question correctly, typically other won’t respond as well. When we do it is to make additions to the answer, or to correct minor mistakes…although that happens less to other people than it does to me.

    lol

Thanks. I seriously apologize for the faux pas. And Andy, sorry if I came across as impolite by trying to get a second opinion. I sincerely appreciate your time.
