White screen, dropped frames and other problems
Hello,
I am currently working on a project that is a HDV 1080i 60i movie. I am doing all of the editing in Premiere CS3 and all effects (i.e., gun flashes, bullet shells flying out, blood effects, etc.) in After Effects.
Once I had the whole movie sequence edited, I would click on a clip in the timeline, copy and paste it into After Effects. I would do the effects on the clip, then Import the After Effects Project file back into Premiere using Dynamic Link. I would then layer over the AEP file into the timeline over the original clip that I copied. Then I would hit Enter and render the clip in Premiere and Save. This method has been working to up until some one the last few clips (of course).
A problem with one clip is that after I do my effects, import through dynamic link, back into Premiere and try to render, I keep getting the “Error compiling movie” message. I will reboot the computer and retry and sometimes it will start rendering but it looks like it skips 30 frames or so in the render monitor. I play it through and it looks ok. But if I save the Premiere project or scroll over in the timeline, that clip is marked red, unrendered again. Long story short, it doesn’t stay rendered.
This clip has quite a few quicktime files that have some of the animations (for blood, bullet shells and gun flashes).
The other issue I have is that I keep getting a message in After Effects along the lines of, “Error (4) reading frame from file” and it seems to drop some frames to a white color with some artifacts from the footage barely showing through. This clip has a lot of quicktime files in the composition for effects too.
I’m sorry, that is a lot of info, but if anyone could help me, I would be greatly appreciate. This project is for my film school and I’m almost done if it wasn’t for these two issues. Thank you again in advance for taking a look at my problems.

AE doesn’t like HDV, since HDV (and other MPEG flavours) uses an interframe codec and AE doesn’t like those, since it has to generate frames by looking at other frames to compile the data. It like intraframe codecs and formats, such as Animation, Photo-JPEG, TGA, PNG, 8-bit uncompressed and Motion-JPEG. Convert your footage into one of those formats before importing it into AE.
