White screen and some freaky screen too!
Posted by Casey Baugess on June 22, 2010 at 11:54 pmHalp! I’ve got the white screen of death going on and I also get this freaky gamma looking screen too. No matter if it’s playing or sitting ont the timeline, there is either a gamma like screen, or just white with audio. Rendering is working fine, but playing back isn’t. I’ve checked all the usual “alpha” settings and nothing there is selected, in both the drop down menus or the user pref. menu.
Quicktime player works fine, I’ve updated to 7.0.2 and no luck. I’ve reinstalled FCP 7, trashed preferences, the whole works! Still no luck. Thanks in advance.
Here’s what I’m running…
FCPS 7
OS 10.5.8
10 GB Ram
2 2.8 GHz quad coreCasey

June 23, 2010 at 12:08 amUPDATE: The problem is somewhere in my preferences, although I’ve deleted them several times. I logged in as a “test” user and the problem was gone. I’ve deleted the preferences in user/library/preferences/finalcutpro … is there another place?

June 23, 2010 at 12:47 amWhat’s the media, and what are the sequence settings?
All the best,

June 23, 2010 at 12:56 amThanks, I’ve tried almost any file type. ProRes HD, DV Pro, H264, etc. Nothing works. I’ve tried many types of sequence settings too. All kinds of combinations. It seems to be somewhere in the preferences as the “test” user works fine. Am I missing a preference somewhere?

June 23, 2010 at 1:04 amIt would be better if you could actually tell us what the media in sequence is and what the sequence settings are so we know what the computer is having to do to play it back. What’s the computer? How much RAM is there? What’s the graphics card? Also what resolution and color settings to you have set for the display system preferences?
All the best,
Tom

June 23, 2010 at 1:10 amEureka! I was writing down all the specs you asked for and I thought it could be something to do with the computer settings and not FCP. I went to check the color settings in User Preferences and then went back to FCP and voila! It’s working. I guess I something in there got reset. Not sure exactly what, but it’s working great now. Thanks for the help, you sparked an idea and it worked!

June 23, 2010 at 1:12 pmThere’s an OS X bug that makes it lose its display settings, FCP is not involved at all.
This happened to me too, so I just reselected the display profile and all was good again.

June 29, 2010 at 10:34 amThanks B.J. Ahlen, you are right!
I went to System prefs in Finder, Displays, Display Prefs and *ping* all is okay again. Phew.
Thanks again

February 17, 2011 at 7:16 pmOMG….Can I just say THANK YOU!!! I have had this problem for a while and kept working on my laptop instead of my iMac and finally updated my iMac with FCP 3, but was still getting the same problem. I came across your problem and how you solved it and it totally worked for me too. I changed my color setting to NTSC, but it looked like any other one aside from what was defaultly there before worked! THANKS SO MUCH AGAIN!!!
