Have you trashed prefs & repaired permissions? Run Disk Warrior, too. Those are the first things I do whenever something odd happens with FCP. It’d also help if you tell folks about your system – software and hardware.

trashed prefs 2x, ran permissions, still get canvas full of white dots which seems to be only on render, but then never goes away….

Try deleting renders with Render Manager and re-render.
