  • Which Vegas (or any other app) for aligning video and audio?

Posted by Scott Matthews on November 18, 2012 at 10:00 pm

    Hi all,

I’m trying to shoot my first little video project: we have a keyboard & mic at home, and I’d like to record the “family band.”

I thought I could simply plug my mixer’s line into my camera (a Sony NEX7) — but it turns out the NEX7 has a lousy “automatic gain control” feature that ruins the sound, and can’t be turned off.

So it seems my only alternative is to record the audio and video separately, align/sync them in some editor, and then render that back out another video file.

I’m wondering which of the Vegas applications is best suited to this? I don’t need complicated editing, I’d just like it to be as fast and simple as possible.

Am I correct to understand that some versions might have some sort of “intelligent align” feature that can compare the audio in the audio file to audio captured by the camera, and perform the sync for me?

I’m open to getting the fancier versions, but all I really care about is a quick and simple way to merge and sync the audio and video.

    Thanks kindly!

Vegas does not automatically align separate audio but it’s really easy to do manually if you also record the same audio via the camera. All you need to do is align the wave form peaks with your eyes between the cameras waveform and the eternal audio’s waveform. I do this all the time.

If you really want to buy a program to do this, most people use PluralEyes.

    Thanks so much!

So if I’m mostly interested in aligning separately recorded audio and video from something like a “home music performance” (eg, a single shot, one camera) — and if I use your “manually eyeball and align waveforms” approach, is there any reason not to get Movie Studio 11 ($44.95) vs. Vegas Pro 12 Edit ($399.95)?

Regarding for PluralEyes (thanks again, hadn’t heard of it) — so the idea there is that it would further automate what I’m trying to do? eg, I shoot the video and record the audio separately, drag the files into PluralEyes, and it figures out how to match them, and then I set in/out points and render a clip?

I had originally been expecting I could simply plug the line into my camera — but this darn AGC ruins the audio. So I’m looking for a solution that won’t make it feel like a chore (eg, if I’m filming my daughter for her grandparents, I don’t want it to wind up a big edit project, if you see what I mean — I want it to be quick and easy so I actually do it :).

Thanks again, I really appreciate the info.

    Hi all, trying again…

If all I really need to do is align audio and video and export back out, is there any reason to get Vegas Pro 12 Edit ($399.95) rather than Movie Studio 11 ($44.95)?

btw, why are most of the Vegas apps at version 12, but just this one is 11?

Movie Studio Platinum 12.0 is an extremely capable Non-Linear Editor (NLE). Unless there is a specific features in Vegas Pro that you need, you can get a lot accomplished with just Movie Studio. Check the Product Comparison page.

You still have to record the same audio from the camera and the recorder audio. It is designed to sync multiple cameras based on the audio so the audio must be the same in both. I feel that it’s overkill for what you want to do. If you had 100’s of clips from multiple cameras and you need to sync them, PluralEyes will save you tons of time. if you just have one camera file and one audio file, you can match them manually pretty easily without additional software.

Becasue that’s an older version that you don’t want. You want to get Movie Studio Platinum 12. There is no reason to buy 11 now that 12 is out.

Thanks again for all the help, hopefully last question…

I just realized that my video camera captures audio at 48KHz, and my audio software is set to 44KHz — is that a problem? I understand that I’ll essentially be “throwing away” the 48KHz track in the video and replacing it with the audio track — but it is “bad” for that audio to be 44KHz?

I can switch my audio to record at 48KHz, but I have it at 44KHz because that seems to be fairly standard for audio. It seems there is also 96KHz.

Is there a “right” way to juggle these settings?

Thank you, and please accept my apologies — I’m a bit unused to the nesting format of this forum and got a bit confused.
