February 1, 2006 at 2:43 pmWith the proliferation of longform, HD projects, the necessity for the “offline-online” workflow is increased. I agree, for the editor working on dv projects, the ability to digitize at full resolution works very well. When working at HD resolutions that requires 1GB of storage for each minute of footage digitized,
the offline approach is required. -

February 1, 2006 at 3:17 pmHi Tim
I think the off/online workflow is still relevant when it comes to editing on one system and finishing on another. A good example of this is Discreet’s Smoke and Flame workflow. When these systems create a subclip they have the option of creating new media, and this is the option most exercised as it saves a lot of redigitise time, which for the hourly rate of these systems quickly adds up.
At the moment we are looking at the potential for the Axio to replace a Smoke in one of these facilities. The integration with AFX makes this a real possibility because AFX has such a strong tool set. The let down is the media managhement because you need the ingest to happen quickly and without additional media.
So here we are talking about Premiere being used as a finishing system and not being used for the offline at all. It still needs better MM even if the whole job is not being done on it.
Actually what Premiere needs is the ability to complete MM tasks on the fly and in the background. When I create a subclip it creates a new file on the HD. When I render a section of the timeline it creates a new file and composites it over the top of the edit (what Discreet calls a hard commit). The ability to change the project settings independant from the media. The ability to access sequences and bins from other projects.
MM is a hard sell because it doesn’t make for slick marketing terms. However you should have a look at the Discreet website and the Smoke specs, it’s a worthwhile read.
Thanks
Paul
