  • Which monitor for MXO2?

Posted by Oren Hercz on January 14, 2009 at 10:22 pm

We’re getting an MXO2 and trying to figure out what the best (budget) monitoring solution is for broadcast delivery. Most footage is shot in Sony EX 720p30 format. Here are two options

    1. One option is getting a JVC DT-V20L1U 20″ HD broadcast monitor (reasonably priced at around $1000). However, the catch is it doesn’t have an SDI input (the one that does costs double), so we’d have to go through component.

    2. The other option is to get a good quality LCD HDMI display and use the MXO2’s calibration feature to get it to act like a broadcast monitor.

So, we have a broadcast monitor that would have to be fed through an analog connection, or an all digital workflow with a big ? concerning how close it gets to broadcast quality color grading.

Which looks like the best option to you?

I’d go JVC with Component connections over the HDTV. Better quality screen. But that’s me.

We use a Sony grade 1 standard definition CRT monitor connected to the component outputs and a Plasma HD connected to the HDMI.

When we want to see accurate colours we refer to the grade 1 SD monitor as colour is colour regardless of resolution.

It is a misconception that people have that if you go HD you have to toss all your SD stuff; not true as the HD monitor in the edit suite is really there to show off to your clients but the engine room can do without it!

    Don’t worry Baz,
your BVM CRT will go soft by next year, and Sony won’t replace it.
So you will be screwed just like the rest of us, and have to suffer with LCD or Plasma. The world as you know it is over – you just won’t deal with it.

[Bob Zelin] “your BVM CRT will go soft by next year”

Thanks for the words of encouragement Bob; especially as I have 4 edit suites with Sony 21″ BVM grade 1’s, audio post and MCR all with Sony BVM grade 1’s…. but they have been running faultlessly for a number of years. And prior to that they were all Barco’s – what a joke they were. At any stage there was always at least 1 at the repair shop and then slowly 2 then 3 and finally I sold the lot on ebay for a hundred bucks and replaced them with the Sony’s – funnily enough I got the Sony’s from a major broadcaster here in Oz really cheap when they upgraded to HD. Funny thing was they asked if they could buy them back 6 months later when they realised the cost of Sony HD BVM CRT’s!!!!

It reminded me of when I brought an old ADO 100 to do aspect ratio conversions for client previews and then the person who sold it to me later wanted to know how he could do the same thing. When I told him to go get an old ADO or Abakas etc he said “I use to have one of those once, I wonder what I did with it…?”

Back to ‘going soft’; no sign yet, its only my eyes that are doing that which would have a bit to do with me having a few more years on you….

My JVC DT-V20L1U is connected using the DVI port. SDI out of my MXO to SDI in HD Link and DVI out to JVC monitor.

    The picture is incredible!

FYI, I paid $860 for my JVC last month.

    first off

no monitor is accurate for a “few years” -Barco and Sony both state that color fidelity starts to degrade in the 2 year of use and for accuracy ALL monitors should be replaced every 5 years

another note on your BVM monitors is that that cannot show a full rec 709 color space according to Martin Euredjian at ecinema.

Not to sound disrespectful but you sound a bit like my buddies in the Early 90’s, lamenting the diminution of vinyl records! Some still swear vinyl LP’s in the right turntable is ‘warmer’ sweeter etc. But really- progress marches onwards. I’m 52 me self so- not a pip sqeak 😉
