Which MBP with FCP Suite- Core 2 Duo 15″ or old Core Duo 17″?
I’m in the market for a laptop and plan on buying a MacBook Pro–either a 15.4″ Core 2 Duo or a 17″ Core Duo (i.e. the older model). On occasion I use Motion, AE, Boris Red, and a storyboard software that uses GPU acceleration, and I FCP a good deal. So my thought was to buy a 15.4″ MBP Core 2 Duo with a 125 MB graphics card. But I’ve been checking around and found some good prices on the older 17″ MBP. Both have FW800, the 17″ would have a faster GPU but slower processing speed.
I’ve checked barefeats.com, but they don’t have speed tests with FCP and the models they tested had different hard drive speeds. So I’m not sure how much I should trust their results (and I’m always skeptical of manufacturer results, so I’m not sure of Apple’s either). Accordingly, what I was wondering was
1- Whether the Core 2 Duo actually makes much difference with FCP Suite over the Core Duo &
2- How much more of a pain in the butt a 17″ is to carry around than a 15.4″. My job makes me split time b/t 2 cities during the week, so I’d be taking it with me.
Thanks ahead of time for any help!
