is AMD Radeon R9 M395X with 4GB video memory worth the upgrade compared to AMD Radeon R9 M395 with 4GB video memory or the AMD Radeon R9 M390

Below are some GPU benchmarks I ran in cooperation with another 2015 iMac 27 owner having a M395. Note some of his numbers are way off — I don’t really trust those, so I would discard those extreme variations. He ran out of time to pursue further testing.

In general the M395X is maybe 10-15% faster than the M395. You can pretty much never have too much GPU performance so IMO it’s worthwhile.

Does FCP X use this extra speed? Does resolve? I’ve had graphic cards in the past that improved some apps’ performance and were meaningless with others.

Both FCP X and Resolve use OpenCL which AMD GPUs are very good at. I’m with Joe, you can never have too much GPU performance, and considering that you cannot upgrade the graphics card later, it’s worthwhile investment now. If it were me, I’d go for the AMD Radeon R9 M395X.
