If you’re adventurous you can actually run Yosemite on older unsupported macs. I have Mac Pro 2,1 running 10.10.3 and it runs great.

Thats true, but you will eventually run up against the roadblocks that Apple has put up, and uncrossable bridges that they have burnt.

HIghly, highly recommend installing a separate boot drive and start rebuilding your system from there, if this is what you really want to do… most advanced GPUs will be unavailable to you in this older chassis, but if you are able to get a Q4000 or ATI5770 running, OpenCL will become available with the ATI card and you will need to start wading through all the nvidia and CUDA drivers that the system will demand.

This is very sadly true. Eventually, you get pushed into unexpected upgrades if you hold onto hardware longer than a certain period of time. Just a fact of life. As long as you party like it’s 1999, you’ll be fine… with 1999 software and operating systems.
