July 28, 2005 at 10:28 pmIt’s impossible to estimate specific layer performance because different effects tax the card more. For example a simple text layer is always going to play fast, but a very complex particle will often play slow. You’ll learn quickly how to optimize previewing as you use Motion.

July 29, 2005 at 8:36 amI agree with what you said in comparison 6800/X850. One thing to note is the overall length of the cards. 6800 is REALLY a big card, consuming a lot of space in the slots using 2slots, 850 is much smaller, making use of 1 slot only in the MAC.
Peformance: It seems that the ATI is slower in Photoshop than the Nvidia – personal impression.

August 1, 2005 at 7:09 pmSome collegues over here have severe problems with the X850, looking very similar to those others had on the X800 before the latest drivers were ready. Anybody seen such problems (massive screen garbage)?

August 6, 2005 at 6:44 pmI have just started using Motion on a new G5 Dual 2.7 with the X850 card from Ati. I’ve seen the massive sreen garbage a few times. 4.5 GB RAM. Did you say there might be a driver update for the X850 card?

August 6, 2005 at 7:27 pmUnfortunately not, only for the X800. We may have to wait until Apple has a fix.
Sorry,

August 22, 2005 at 4:58 pmI’ve had the same problems here (dual 2.7, X850, 4.5Gb ram).
The best way I could describe the problem is that occasionally the geometry breaks and little triangles pop out of the display.
Also seen similar issues running Virtual PC.
It’s definitely application specific so I’m pretty sure it is a driver thing rather than a hardware problem.

August 26, 2005 at 3:30 pmThis has also been happening to me- Dual 2.7 G5 w/ 2.5Gigs RAM using the x850. I’ve posted some screen grabs at http://www.editmation.com/ati
I’m reluctant to update the ROM since it’s not listed as one of the supported cards.
ATI says it’s faulty memory, but it seems strange that others would have the same problem on similar machines.
