Which cpu on a budget?
I THINK I have some money coming and I want to upgrade my computer and software, but I can’t afford to be stupid. So please help:
Currently, iMac 2.16 Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.6, FCS 2, 3 GB ram (maxed) 250 Gb internal HD, 2 Lacie FW (400) externals total 1320 GB.
I really want FCS3…it seems the less power you have the more it will help.
Possible: iMac 2.66 Quad Core, 4 Gb Ram (up to 8), ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics with 512MB, 1 TB internal drive. $2,000. 27″ display of course.
Mac Pro 2.66 Quad Core (new), 3 Gb Ram (up to 16), ATI 512mb card, 640 Gb HD expandable, 24″ Cinema Display. $3,600.
USED Mac Pro, 2.66 Quad Core, 4 Gb Ram, ATI 256-512, 23″-24″ Apple Display, no or limited warranty, $2,000.
What would YOU do?

Depends on the type of video you’re doing, what format, what delivery. Depends on who’s selling the used machine.

I shoot HDV 1080i 60 with a Canon XL-H1. So far I’ve been editing native but I want to try Prores. I have no problems with the actual editing native, but renders in color and compressing to final format are unbelievably slow. I output to DVD and H264 for web.

I would love more people to chime in on this one, I would like to hear as much as possible on this as I am also interested in the new iMacs as well (the quad-core i5 or i7 with 8gig RAM).
I would like to also no the EXACT same question only I use an xh-a1 and going to add the 5d/7d to the mix. I also would also like to start using pro-res soon.
So anybody can help? Thanks from the both of us 🙂
