Which Codec to use
I’m using MPEG video down loaded from a Sony Handycam. Which editing mode would work best, and if I select “video for windows”, which compressor should I use when initially setting up my project?

MPEG1 or 2 or 4? What size, multiplexed, audio format, from what camera, and what do you want to do with it? Just a couple of questions to understand what you are trying to accomplish.
BTW, MPEG is not really suited for editing.

Your best bet is to get a Analog/Digital converter and capture thru that, converting the analog out signal from your camera to digital video. ADS Pyro AV Link is about $130 at B and H Photo Video. The results will be much better than trying to edit already highly compressed files.
