Which $1,000-range HD camera do you recommend?
Which $1,000-range HD camera would you recommend for working in Premiere?
Here’s your situation: you’re putting together a project for an online video site. The videos will be interview style, shot in HD and edited in Premiere. The final video lengths will be about 2-3 minutes long, played through a Flash wrapper. There may be a future need for distribution on DVD, but for now, everything will be online. Which camera would you recommend?
I did a similar project 5 years ago using SD, so now I’m getting caught up on what has changed in the last 5 years.
Here are my requirements for the camera so far:
1. HD
2. Around $1,000
3. External mic capability (for a lav or boom)
4. Ideally a file format that I can edit natively in PremiereI was looking at the Canon HF10, but then I read that there is an extra conversion step for dealing with the AVCHD format. (HD file formats are still unclear to me.) Extra file conversion steps sound like something I would prefer to avoid, if possible.
Also, I’m not married to Premiere, but I am already familiar with the software as well as the rest of CS4, so I that’s the route I’m on. But if someone has a better camera+software rec, I’m open-minded.

My 2 cents. Many SD cameras look better than HD cameras in the same price range at that level. And the used SD market is huge.
Now it depends on how picky you are in your image requirements, and how much control you will have over lighting conditions.
Other options if you insist on HD would be the HV series from Cannon which sport HDV recorders.
The audio input will however require a mini 1/8″ to XLR adapter. I would recommend borrowing a bit more if you can and look at used HVX 200 if you can.

My money is in the canon hf series of avchd cameras for tapeless,
and on the canon hv-30 or 40 for hdv. they rock, pretty good in low light and are small and cheap. spend the rest on a good mic to plug into it!- aAndrew Silk

If this is for professional work, I would personally stay away from the HV series…
