where to place .mov files before I import into FCP7?
1st time documentarian. Trying to make smart choices regarding where I put my source files.
I captured a 100 gigs of VHS and digi8 tapes to imovie sometime ago. I am now converting them to DV/NTSC (I believe the highest res format i can from imovie 6, on a G4) as .mov files. I’ll be using them as archival footage alongside HDV footage from a Canon HV-20.
Now, I’m transferring those .mov files onto a proper 2.66ghz imac running fcp 7. Saying all this, I’m trying to figure out the best place to place this hunk of .mov’s. about 30 hours of HDV footage currently on the external drive. Do all those .mov files need to be on the same 500 gig SATA drive I’m currently storing my “Final Cut Pro Documents” folder on, maybe as a folder named “VHS DV files”? Then import them in?
Or Should it be out of it, at another folder on the separate drive? Or can I even get away with just leaving it on the internal drive of the imac–and then following through with importing. I haven’t started the editing, but I’m hoping to do things/make choices to preserve speed of computer as much as possible. CPU aside, I’m working with chunky files already.
Thoughts, video wizards? Thanks ahead of time.
(BTW, i searched the forum already, and couldn’t find an answer to this question).

Hi Vince, I’ve always known that the best practice is to keep your project file on the internal hard drive of the computer and all media files on a separate external hard drive. Then always back up your project file at the end of the day. That is the file where all the sweat and blood of the day is 🙂
