Where can I find a comparison chart for Vegas Pro 10?
Posted by Rod Gajeske on March 10, 2011 at 8:32 pmI’m looking for a comparison chart to compare Vegas against Avid Media Composer 5.5 and also Final Cut Pro. I am trying to convince a studio I may be headed to that Vegas Pro 10 is extremely capable of competing well against these two programs.

March 10, 2011 at 10:23 pmYou have a hard task ahead there…A studio that uses and
invest heavily in Avid and Final Cut Pro will have a hard
time seeing the benefits Vegas has over these two juggernauts.
Its like having a conversation as to which religion is the
right religion….lolSteve Rhoden

March 10, 2011 at 10:38 pmTake a copy in to them and show them it working. I recently met a VERY experienced film editor who was one of the first in the UK to use Avid – he watched me for a minute – then had a go with Vegas and was an instant covert!

March 11, 2011 at 12:54 amThanks for those answers and the comparison chart guys. I realize it will be an uphill battle but I also am well aware that Sony Vegas is an amazing and powerful NLE and have used it myself since 4.0.

March 11, 2011 at 5:33 amRod, while I truly appreciate your desire to make Vegas more popular, the issue of changing out a business model based on two of the leading competitors is pretty much an uphill climb and could be a career limiting move. It has not much to do with technical virtues.
Much of it is the ecosystem that Apple has created around FCP. They came to market early with a very sophisticated product and got serious buy in from thought leaders in Hollywood and elsewhere. They tied it to their very successful computer platform. They have a huge market of trained people coming in from the schools knowledgeable on it. Low wage labor that is well versed on the product.
The Avid side is the Hollywood, ‘we’re the pros’ POV, which also is not necessarily based on today’s realities (though to be clear, I’ve read over time of many shortcomings of Vegas as it relates to Avid and FCP, but I can’t personally validate those stories). And let’s be honest, Windows was a late comer to this market. Just a few years ago when I got serious about re-entering video I could not, for the life of me, get a Sony camera to connect to my Windows XP machine using Vegas (for reasons I still don’t understand). I got mad, ran out with my camera, went to a friend with Apple and FCP and immediately got it to connect and was editing in minutes. I never looked back until recently. Is W7 and Vegas 10.c finally able to seriously compete with the likes of FCP? Yes. It was in the 9x world, but 64 bit across the board has taken it to a new level. As has Adobe’s product suite, which when you look at all their products, is very compelling on it’s surface.
Some of it is also Sony’s fault, for not really approaching this market the same way Apple has. It seems more like a subsidiary of Microsoft than a leading candidate for best NLE. Just spend time on their official support board and hear the usual complaints of their support staff that people pay to dial into and their lack of knowledge. I don’t see many touting their excellence, unlike Apple’s. I have used Apple’s support staff occassionally, and was blown away by how good they were. Also, I don’t see Sony doing the real promotions, and their marketing seems anemic. If Sony put only a bit more into this product (mainly marketing and alliance building), they could really make a huge push forward. God help us if a few of the usual pros that help this forum left. Sony’s support seems very shallow, compared to the breadth and depth of Apples’ FCP community.
I think that Vegas is limited more by Sony than the product. The bottom line is that I can produce output way faster on Vegas than FCP, but to be clear, I am not a pro at the level you likely are and there may be limitations I’m unaware of. Doing my work faster makes me more profit. That’s ultimately why I use it.
The real dark horse is this new NLE called Lightworks that is open source and is now in beta test. If it’s as good as they say, and it’s nearly free, then all bets are off for the future.
