  • When to use 1920×1280 vs. 1920×1080?

Posted by Jd Mulvey on September 4, 2012 at 9:37 pm

Hello all, I’ve been reading this forum for over a decade but posting for the first time.

I can’t find any resources explaining when 1920×1280 would be used. I’m editing a video composed of stills scaled to 1920×1280. Since I plan to project the film, and my projector’s native resolution is 1920×1080, I plan to crop, but wanted to check if I’m missing anything….is there any reason one would use 1920×1280?

Many many thanks for your help.

    Never.

[jd mulvey] “I’m editing a video composed of stills scaled to 1920×1280.”

Why? That’s just plain wrong. !920×1200 I can see, but ONLY if you want to play back on a 24″ monitor that has that resolution. Nothing I know of has 1920×1280.

If that’s the case, why the HECK are you working at 1920×1280??

There is a 1280×1080 format. That is ONLY DVCPRO HD, and it is super-anamorphic. And FCP scales that to 1920×0180. But nothing I have ever heard of is 1920×1280.

How did you get that in your head?

(Please take my snarkiness with a grain of salt. It is meant in mirth)

Thanks for confirming my suspicion. I meant that I’m editing in 1920×1080.
I scaled down the stills I shot to be 1920 wide, which made them 1280 high. So I started googling 1920×1280 to see if that’s a legit resolution and found many threads where people seem to be working with it, which confused me. So just wanted to confirm that I should indeed just crop the height, which I have.
    Anyway, Thanks!
