Whenever I slow down or speed up a clip in the Final Cut Pro timeline, all the clips after that clip are either pushed down or moved up in time. How can I change the speed of a clip within the timeline and keep everything else in the same location?

Get FCP 7. It has options to not do this. Previous versions do not.

Or match frame to the clip in the viewer…apply the speed change, cut it back into the sequence.

I used to copy the clip to another timeline (called wrk area) apply speed change there and copy and paste back. Also can move it to the end of the program to apply speed changes or upgrade 😉

Hi Derek, Try opening up the clip you want to speed change from the time-line once you know how long you want it.(Double click) so it opens in the Viewer. In the motion tab > speed settings, adjust your speed with the key frames (NOT the %number) and you will find that this should do what you need without the annoying “Unable to complete command. A conflict occurred during trim opperation” warning. . (unless I completely misunderstood your question.)

    Hope this helps.
