    One can:

    – Put INs and OUTs on the source monitor & grab to the timeline one by one.
    – Put markers and when finished with all clips, put INs and OUTs by the markers and continue as above.
    – Put INs and OUTs and drag to a ‘selects’ bin, then when finished with all clips continue as above from ‘selects’.
    – Put INs and OUTs and drag with ctrl to a ‘selects’ bin to create a subclip, then continue as above from ‘selects’.

A great deal of what I do is short-form, so I tend to use the first option. Also, I started in the linear editing days. So while I am doing my initial rough cut, there’s still a lot of “previous shot/this shot/next shot” in my thought process.

For long form I will sometimes choose different workflows, depending on the material. But I will still go back through the timeline on the rough cut with that linear thinking.

Ordinarily I put everything on a timeline, which becomes the assembly, then duplicate that timeline and cut away what I don’t want. Then rinse and repeat. The sequences become a history of my editing process and I can always go back a few steps to look for what I have cut away. Your options for skimming and trimming are much greater in a timeline, plus you always know the total running time of all the material you are looking at.

Generally I edit from the Source Monitor with I and Os and use the shortcut keys to Insert / Overlay.

Follow that with Trim edits (all modes) in the edit sequence.

Variations depending on project but I rarely use Razor or Trim away workflows.

My preferred method most of the time is: “- Put INs and OUTs on the source monitor & grab to the timeline one by one.”

And ou left off automate to sequence, which is still very useful for a certain set of users.
