  • What’s the value in converting VOB to AVI versus MPEG2?

Posted by Jack on May 19, 2005 at 9:29 pm

    Hi,

I’ve been converting my wedding DVD from VOB to AVI and have noticed that the files are enormous. I’ve also recently started to convert them to MPEG2 and the files are smaller and take less time to convert. What’s the value of each of these file formats for video editing in Vegas and processing in Architect?

    Thanks,

    Jack

A VOB, if built for a standard dvd is a mpeg-2. Ya, to convert one into an AVI, use divx or xvid (mpeg-4) for a smaller file size. Im assuming when YOU say AVI you mean DV ntsc which doesn’t use heavy compresssion therefore is a larger file size. The value of converting a VOB to a DV ntsc AVI would be to edit it I guess. If the dvd was built with dolby auidio then you would need a utility to convert back to a mpeg 2 with an audio stream, can’t really help with that. If it uses PCM audio then you should be able to just rename the files extension to .mpg. It is already an mpeg-2. I rambled sorry if I wasn’t much help. GL 😛

To clarify this post. What I wanted to know was in terms of editing in Vegas, which is better: AVI file format or MPEG2 File format.

    Thanks

DV-AVI is much better for editing than MPEG2.

In fact, after trying to edit mpeg2 for a minute, you may decide to call it impossible.
