    Hello,
I’m thinking of upgrading to FCP5.. But I have no use for multicamera or HDV stuff. I’m mainly using Betacam, DVCAM and DV. Should I bother? I’ve been reading the posts and it seems some people are using it fine while others have problems. I also read some FCP5 reviews on LAFCP that seem to indicate some improved preformace on the timeline and doing insert edits. But should I hold out?
I am using a dual 1gz G4 quicksliver with FCPHD and it works fine right now. I would think about upgrading if the “dumping prefs” issue is solved, it has skip clip in Batch capture, copy&paste and track control in the timeline works better, video and motion(timeline) windows are updated and handled better, garbage mate improvements, some guides in the canvas, levels on capture, more color correction….. What do you guys think? Oh and what about live type?

I went ahead and installed STP. I’m pretty excited about that!

    Thanks, Chris

The big thing about FCP 5 is the frame accuracy on edit to tape. FCP 4.5 can slip a few frames one way or another during an Edit to Tape. FCP 5 seems to be rock solid with frame accuracy on the Edit to Tape.

DVCPro HD codec performance is definitely improved and the overall operation is snappier over FCP 4.5. We’ve taken both of our systems up to 10.4.1 and FCP 5.0 and so far so good. Some crashes to be sure and other weird issues, but we’re cutting a pretty simple series right now, so we’re working around any weirdness. Looking forward to an update from Apple.

    Thanks Walter,
I think I’m going to wait it off till FCP6 (If it ain’t broke..) and have some fun learning STP. Do you know if the new Live type Media 1 and 2 disks work with the old Live Type Application? And can you just install the new Live Type App?
    Thanks, Chris

You’ll be waiting until at least next April. If you’re doing broadcast work, FCP 5 is definitely worth the upgrade to ensure you’re frame accurate on masters.

    Walter,
Yeap, its a long long time till April. At work, we use Betacam, so being able to accuately do insert edits is pretty important. I had almost forgot that a NLE should be able to do this “no problem” and that the standard method of doing inserts was not finding nice long disolves to go in and out on. At home, I’m DV / DVCAM / (tapeless). Its my understanding that one can not do insert edits on DV decks, is this really true? What about HDV?

After being so excited about STP, I’m bummed to read the Posts (above) problems with back and forth work flow issues. Maybe all those STP tools and loops should just be in FCP. I’m a big fan of one stop shopping, call me lazy. Just some last night thoughts…

I’m in the middle of some projects both here and at work so I guess I’ll wait for a lull in the storm to go FCP5. How does having both FCPHD and FCP5 on the same machine work? I know you have to rename FCPHD so that FCP5 does not replace it. But are there any other issues I should be aware of?
    Thanks, Chris

[chris] “Its my understanding that one can not do insert edits on DV decks, is this really true? What about HDV?”

There may be some decks that can do insert edit but I’m not sure. I don’t use HDV and have no plans to so I can’t answer that one.

[chris] “How does having both FCPHD and FCP5 on the same machine work?”

I have two harddrives in my machine so one drive is fully set up with 10.3.8 / FCP 4.5 and the other drive is 10.4.1 with FCP 5. Works very well, even with my Kona 2 card.
