    [MitchJi] “Hi,

Does this setting effect the quality of MPEG2 compression in Compressor or Bitvice?

Does this setting effect the quality when written out to DV tape?

Does this setting effect the quality if the clip is imported back into FCP?

    Thanks,

    Mitch”

No,No,No. Only affects on-screen quicktime player playback quality. That’s why people think DV quality sucks. They just don’t know about the “high quality” switch!

We also found it does not affect Adobe’s Premiere Pro, but it does affect Adobe’s Encore DVD creation software on PC.

I usually just export from FCP using compressor. Exporting a DV quicktime and then going into compressor is an extra step that isn’t needed, not too mention the drive space needed to export the first quicktime and then the MPEG 2. As far as using A.pack that depends on the length of your project, an hour long project you would want to use A.pack as Don said, but if your talking a half hour or less then save yourself a step.

The first reason I export a self-contained .mov from FCP is to keep an archived uncompressed copy of the timeline which allows me to delete projects when completed. The second reason is to use Compressor as a stand alone app which frees up FCP for continued editing on other projects while Compressor works in the background. Not that I’ve noticed, but I’ve also been told that exporting to Compressor within FCP is not nearly as stable as using Compressor by itself.

The other reason for using A.Pack all the time is not only to save space on the DVD but also to keep the audio bit rate down so DVD players down’t choke on the much higher .aif bit rates.
