Posted by Mark Suszko on April 9, 2019 at 2:04 pmThe demo has me enraptured. Wondering if my machine is up to it.

April 9, 2019 at 2:45 pmThe first dose is always free…
I might do it at some point, but wanted to save some time first and just get a general answer.

April 10, 2019 at 10:19 amI think the best answer is to check Blackmagic’s Configuration Guide and see what it says in terms of processors, RAM, and GPUs. The iMac Pros do OK, as do recent iMacs with Thunderbolt 3’s and the ability to use an external eGPU. If you use very, very light-duty files (like ProRes 422LT), it can work on relatively old iMacs, like 4-5 years old.

April 13, 2019 at 11:05 pmI’m running a Studio Resolve 15 on my Silver-Tower MacPro 5,1 mid-2010, but almost the only original components are the power supply and mother board.
It’s more like, what’s the oldest mac that will run the current macOS and support the newest GPUs and how much memory can you stuff in it, and do you really need Thunderbolt/ USB3.0?

April 14, 2019 at 1:17 amIt’s maddening that Apple won’t let users drop in a Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt 3 board into a Cheesegrater Mac and have it work with any Mac operating system.

April 14, 2019 at 6:20 amIIRC Thunderbolt requires chipset support so you can’t just add a Thunderbolt card to any computer.

April 22, 2019 at 6:06 pmFWIW I run it on my 2013 iMac 21 inch which I put and ssd into. It runs great!
If you don’t have an ssd in your iMac, get one in there. It’s scary to open up the glass but sooooo worth it.
