Activity Forums Adobe After Effects What’s the maximum number of layers?

yes. To my knowledge, the number of layers is unlimited – Obvioulsy there will be performance lag if all 500 are shown at the same time.

If you want to verify it, you can do what I just did and duplicate a solid 500 times. I just duplicated a few, and then duplicated all the duplicates – it took about 20 seconds to generate 500 layers. No errors or warnings.

4 years ago, during the days of AE 5.5, I rendered off a composition that had over 350 layers. Course it took over 20 hours.

Thanks, Aharon. I’m working at a station without AE so I’ll take your word for it. By the way, check my sig line link to learn my secret identity.

Well, I’ve created a project that necessitated 2900 layers, and I couldn’t precomp because of image size restrictions, but it looks like I broke after effects on PC and Mac.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Gery

With each successive year of newer and better technology, these parameters continue to change. But I can say that right now, with CS5.5, I have 3000 layers in a composition (not all being displayed at the same time). AE will “black out” when scrolling down through the layer list when it hits around layer number 1918. The way to see more layers beyond that, is to “shy” the top layers as you work (or precompose). But it seems as if AE is not truly unlimited when it comes to showing and working with your layers in the timeline. This does not effect their render or display in the composition window, however. So that aspect may still be unlimited. But if you can’t work with more than 1918 layers at a time, it’s hard to call it unlimited. Hopefully this limitation will be improved in future releases, as I can see people needing more layers.

I could onnly get 964 on my MBP 16GB ram SSD drive AE 6.0 OSX Mountain Lion

After layer 964 the rest of the layers where blank I could see the layers but the lenght of each layer was inexistent.

I did no more investigating….. on my particular project i can work around that.
