What’s the better option? Used Mac Pro QC or new iMac i5 27in
I am looking to upgrade my trusty G4 PowerMac to work with HD formats both tape and tapeless.
I have a VERY limited budget so I am looking at a 2nd hand Mac Pro Intel 2.0GHz QC with 4Gb RAM and a 500Gb Hard Disk for $1000 or should I hold out for a new iMac 27 inch which will set me back about $2000 (AUS)?
I know the iMac has a much faster processor but is it $1000 better?.
All my output is in SD PAL so I do a lot of converting from various HD codecs.Brett Ramsey

I’d get the new iMac if I were you. It’ll be tons faster than a used MacPro. Especially with encoding. And there’s that built in monitor. With the MacPro you’d need to buy a monitor too

In order to use the iMac with tape formats, you’ll probably want to wait for the new thunderbolt options for a/v in/out, like the Blackmagic Ultrastudio, or the MXO2 with Thunderbolt.
Both of these options are not available until around July – so that might be a factor for you to consider.
For every other reason, I’d go with the iMac. Better, faster, now just as connectable.
