What’s the best way to work with a project on multiple hard drives?
I have some small projects where all the exported footage is less than 200 GB. I usually use a G-tech drive but I like being able to edit sometimes in a coffee shop on a portable hard drive. What’s the easiest way to use the same library on two drives? Back with FCP 7, I would just have the media files on both drives and just copy the project file. It’s obviously not the same in FCP X. Thoughts?

You can do exactly what you did in fcp7 with FCPX as long as your library is set up to use externally managed media. Just duplicate the media to each drive, copy the library, re-link on launch, and edit.

that’s good to know going forward…..That said, I already have a project that is using media from inside the library. I can copy it to both hard drives, but if I work on one and then want to use the other, are there certain files I can copy over to make that work? Or do I need to – if possible – retroactively change it so the media on the library becomes external?

You can go to the library properties and change it from internal to any folder you like. Then tell FCPX to consolidate the library and everything will be moved to the new location.

So, i did this wrong. I copied over all the footage to a portable hard drive and after editing, I copied over my library file. I opened it on the new hard drive and nothing is connected. I looked in the library inspector and the media location is the old hard drive. Is there a way to change the media location of a project when you open it on a new hard drive?

That sounds like the way it works. go to the edit menu and re-link the files. Should only take a minute or two.
