Whats the best way to bring in large video clips that you only want to use a little of?
Hi there
sorry if this is a stupid question, but if youve got an hour clip and only want to use say 10 seconds, whats the best way to do this? if i bring in the clip and then trim it down on either side to the 10 seconds i want is this ok…i know u can do this, but does this affect render times? i know i could probably cut it and save it out in another program and then bring it in, but was just wondering if there were any other ways in AE to do this? i know in the new photoshop cs3 when u bring in video frames u can select how much of the video is going to come in…

I don’t think this would affect render times. You are specifying to AE that you are only using a small portion of the video by trimming the beginning/end, it’s only rendering that small portion to your final product.

I havent tried to trim both sides of a clip (beginning and end) but I have trimmed or cut a clip/layer in half. If you put your marker in the spot you want to cut and hit Ctrl+Shift+D, I believe is the command, it will cut the clip at that point. From there you can edit the piece then reinsert it back in once its been rendered. Im not sure if thats the best way to do it, but thats probably what I would try.

After Effects will only consider the portion of the clip you are currently using, so render times shouldn’t be effected by bringing in large clips.
This approach would definitely be preferable to rendering out a smaller portion of your master clip for use in AE, as that would introduce yet another level of recompression, RGB/YUV conversion issues etc.

I’m going through the same thing right now, and AE will only look at what needs rendering. To make your life easier though, preview the clip in quicktime to know roughly where you should start and stop, then open the clip in AE so it shows the entire clip in the timeline so you know where to slide the start and end bars. I’ve got a few seconds in hour long clips…it’s rough, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
