Not exactly a simple question. What is the size and framerate of your video?

Is this a site for desktops/laptops or a mobile site?

Are you just simply uploading to Vimeo or YouTube?

There’s no single answer for that, as it depends on a number of factors. I suggest reading this article. It may be helpful: https://www.streaminglearningcenter.com/articles/streaming-101-the-basics—codecs-bandwidth-data-rate-and-resolution.html

The video size is 512 x 288 and will mostly be played on mobiles and tablets.

Without knowing the content of your video, I’d say between 1mbps and 2mbps will do the trick for that size. Easily above 3G speeds.

Thanks Angelo. I usually use “Any Video Converter Professional” to convert video. Most of these are FLVs at 512 x 288 and aren’t too heavy with animation and graphic effects… really just talking heads. I’ve been using a video bit rate of 2500. After your response I’m thinking I must be doing something wrong because you’re saying to use a rate as low as 1 or 2.

What happens to a video with a video bit rate that’s too high?

No, you’re right there. I said between 1mbps and 2mbps and you’re saying 2500kbps also known as 2.5mbps. If you’re happy with those results for the amount of detail and motion in your shots, I’d say your initial estimates are on target.
