  • What’s the best codec to use for Quicktime?

Posted by Ron on August 24, 2005 at 1:32 pm

I am converting from a PC based system with Premiere Pro to FCP and still trying to find my way around the QT world as opposed to the AVI world.

I first noticed a problem with some Digital Juice footage, which I had rendered out as a QT DV-NTSC file. The footage would not play back in the viewer window on my external monitor, but was just fine in the canvas window. Once I recompressed the footage through the Media Manager, everything worked great.

So, when exporting footage from another piece of software such as After Effects, or Digital Juice, what is the best QT codec to use, from the long list that is presented, which will provide the best quality and the most efficient playback on both the timeline and the viewer. And what settings?

I am editing in DV on a new G5 Dual 2.3Ghz Mac with 2.5gig memory.

    Thanks

DV NTSC. There aren’t any settings. If you see a slider, put it at maximum quality fwiw. But it’s a fixed rate format. There are some settings like 29.97fps and lower field first that you want to make sure is set in AE.

    Bret,

Not necessarily… I would say that might depend on the original source and what he’ll be editing. If he’s editing DV, then you are right, but what if he’s going to be editing 720 x 486 D1??? Then the choice is a bit tougher.
