  • What’s my best SD-HD upconverting option?

Posted by Bill Kelly on December 8, 2006 at 4:27 am

I have a few clips on a Beta SP tape that need to go into a DVCPro HD timeline. Right now I have the clips captured as Uncompressed SD. Will I get the best resolution in my DVCPro HD timeline by simply importing the clips and resizing them and rendering? Or, should I set the Kona LH capture settings to 1080i DVCPro HD 29.97, bring it in that way, and resize(?) it in the timeline? Is there another or better way using the Kona LH to upconvert the Beta SP footage to a DVCPro HD timeline? Thanks for your help

The Kona LH cannot upconvert SD to HD. Only the Kona 3 can (I feel your pain, I too have the LH).

Cheapest bet? Capture 8-bit uncompressed and resize and render. Better bet…use Compressor to upconvert. I have a droplet on http://www.proapptips.com that is close, but needs tweaking…plus this conversion takes a LONG time. BEST bet, upconvert all your footage with a Terranex (or wait until the show is locked and then pull selects and have them upconverted…this is what I am currently doing, same situation actually).

Or, go to a place that has a Kona 3 and capture the footage there.

    Shane,

Thank you for the response. I’ll probably send one clip through Compressor and compare that to a resized clip in the DVCPro HD timeline and see which one is better. There’s only about 8-10 3 or 4 second clips that I have to put in an hour long show, so it shouldn’t be too demanding on time if I upconvert through Compressor. Thanks again.

Compressor does a way better job. You have to choose best quality and de-interlacing at best quality.
