September 12, 2006 at 11:45 pmHey Bob,
I don’t think 1gb of RAM is really enough for professional editing with FCP, and undercutting RAM essentially drags performance at every level of operation, especially RT performance, while slower processors will primarily be a drag on rendering. Personally, my creative time is more valuable to me, and I figure I can always do stuff, even just eat lunch or drink coffee, while my computer is rendering. So, I’d be willing to render a bit slower if increased RT editing performance allows me to keep working away and making creative decisions.

September 13, 2006 at 12:17 amI agree with David. Go for the RAM.
When you’re rending or making DVDs it will be slower, but what does that mean, exactly? Well, for example, it might mean that the computer takes 2.5 hours to render or compress instead of 1.8 hours.
Ok, that’s slower, but are you gonna sit there and watch it render for 1.8 hours? No, you’re gonna go find something else to do anyway. I’d rather have a machine that’s fast while I’m using it rather than fast when I’m not using it.
(Warning: All numbers in this post were totally made up as an example. They have no relationship to reality. Your millage may vary.)

thanx!
“undercutting RAM essentially drags performance at every level of operation, especially RT performance, while slower processors will primarily be a drag on rendering”
thats waht i wanted to know! what aspects of FCP are affected by CPU power and what aspects are affected by ram size.
and based on that info, i agree that more ram would be better. thanx
ironically in the time it took to make this post and reply, 2 third party companies announced RAM for intel macs, at a lot less money thatn apple wants, so now i can have both!
thanx again

September 14, 2006 at 4:52 pmOur IT guy said it was out, and cheaper, but he did not say where
I saw ads for ram at Anandtech.com, and they are pretty good mac heads anyway
