Whats is the best practice to render a 16:9 (raw footage) into a 4:3 rendered format?
Hi Guys,
Here is the situation:
I shoot all my videos in 16:9 format and render them the same dimensions. However, for this project we are working on videos that will be embedded in web pages (basically lawyer profiles) and we will need to make them either squares 1:1 or 4:3.For once I am lost. Since I have never done 4:3 videos and these clips are shot in 16:9 can you guys please throw some light as to even where I should begin and give me a few steps. Also, can it be in HD?
I have been shooting all my videos with excellent results working and rendering in Sony Vegas. Could not be happier and thanks a lot to some of you folks who have helped me all along. Thanks for you help in advance.

Where you given specific instructions that they
had to be rendered as squares or 4:3?

If you’re going to be embedding videos in a webpage, then you probably need to find a way to stream them from an embedded player applet (often Adobe Flash based), in a similar manner to how video sites like youtube and vimeo do it (but hosted on your own server). That’s something you need to ask your webmaster about, and will determine what size/format you need to render your videos to. Probably something small will be fine, like 360p (640×360) or even smaller like 320×240. They don’t really need to be HD if it’s just quick profiles for clients to view.
If you’ve shot and framed the videos as widescreen, then it might be best to keep them that way. If you need to change to 4:3 to fit them into the site layout, then just start a new project at the desired resolution (like 320×240 or whatever), drop your media on the timeline, and apply pan/crop to each clip and “match output aspect”. That will crop them exactly to the project aspect ratio.
