What’s better way to make a moving, irregular grid?
I am trying to make a moving background consisting of vertical and horizontal lines that are spaced and move irregularly- creating a grid. The “cells” of the grid are filled with various colors and change shape as the lines move. You can see an example at https://video.magicvideo.com/grid/
I have done this manually; creating shape layers with masks and animating all the masks independently. I have used guides with “snapping” enabled to help, but I do not know how to keyframe guide changes, so it is hard to undo. Because the cells change shape in multiple directions, I cannot parent them to any single layer. I am hoping to find a way of parenting different sides of a rectangular mask to different objects.
I appreciate any advice.

You could do that with expressions. I could furbish you with a basic setup that you could use. Just need to dig it out of my collection and modify it a bit. Stay tuned.

It’s not pretty and needs a lot of polishing, but should get you going. Just play with the sliders in the “Main” composition. If you’re lucky, I may keep working at it and a much more optimized version may be available some time soon. You’ve awakened my spirits and I wonder why I never before bothered with such a setup… So long
