  • what’s Avid’s plan?

Posted by Grinner Hester on January 16, 2008 at 5:15 pm

Many of us are well invested in Avid and few of us get straight answers from em so for years, we have only been able to speculate on what their plan is.
Based on what I was seeing, I was certain the plan was to file chapter 11 and go golfin’. They could have done that easily a couple of years ago though. I know of nobody working in the developmental dept (but would love to be proved wrong)and the only product managers I know of at Avid are sales managers. (hence the false advetising)
With all other companies growing their products to industry needs and Avid taking constant backward strides, I think it’s plain to see their plan is not to remain the industry standerd for NLEs.
So, what do you think the plan is?
I see executive shuffeling which means one of two things…
new blood is energized and ready to respond to industry demands or somone had enough and got out while the gettin was good. We all saw a survey a month or two ago, which either means they do care (but still don’t know what the industry needs are) or somone was scrambling to keep their gig another couple of months.
I’d really like it if somone from Avid would chime in with anything indicating a plan for the future. Buying time approaches again and, of course, there are few shops today that can fathem writing another check to Avid at this stage.
I find myself at a crossroads.
    What’s the plan, Avid?

do you actually expect to get an answer on this forum ?
Besides, all I want to know is how I can do HD on my AVID
Meridian system. When will AVID write OS-X 10.5 drivers for the Meridian card set? Can I trade in my Quadra 950 for a new MAC Pro ? Can my AVID DS do 2K?

I fear that people on this forum will read my stupid questions, and wonder when this things will come true !

Wait. I just upgraded my Meridian Mac system to Windows 95. I’m able to do fully compressed HD at 360X240, 15FPS. Seems to work fine… I can’t wait ’til my Win2K edition gets here from ebay. I hear it supports that new youtube format – I can’t wait to see my work on America’s Funniest Videos….

Seriously, it would be nice to hear from an Avid insider regarding the future. I’m about to drop some cash on a new edit system, and our small company has 3 systems to maintain (2 XPress Pros and the aforementioned Meridian). We’ve invested not only money, but effort into maintaining a skill set amongst the crew. Seems silly to have so much time invested in a system, and then go and buy something else, but…

The New President of Avid, Graham Sharp held an informal lunch at Keycode media in North Hollywood a few months back. I was one of about 30 people who attended. It was a casual Q & A session. I got that he is planning to bring avid back to the forefront. He is also well aware that we are all skeptical. A few things I took away from the event:

They are not going to build hardware unless they can add value. Other than that, third party hardware seems open.

They need to limit the editor line-up, currently there are 14 different edit systems.

XML support is being worked on.

The survey that they did showed Avid had the lowest customer satisfaction of any company that had been surveyed by that survey company.

And finally, there would be product announcements in February.

At one point I stated that Adrenaline EOL and he didn’t refute me. That speaks volumes.

    Hi,
Thats why I am seeing so many Adrenalines on ebay…Has the time come for me to also put it there..I have one with Dnxcel board with AMC2.7.

Will there be a third party hardware support such as for AJA Kona cards or Decklink cards…aka FCP.

    lol
“they need to limit their line up having 14 different systems”

knowing 3 is all ya need… agreed.
ok how much do I get paid!?
where do they scoop these execs up from?
Seems hiring someone with savvy in the business would be a swell idea.

No, Bob. I do not expect a response from Avid. I really don’t expect anything from them anymore. At some point we have to stop abusing ourselves with false hope.
My post was mearly a facetios way of venting.

    This is all bull.
Even EOL, adrenaline is still a good tool. (I’ve bought one, new, few months ago)
Perhaps people are selling them, but there are a hell of a lot less on ebay than in daily use.

Go to the FCP forum, and see how many problems people are having over there.

Wait and buy the latest newest product of anything, and be the first one to find out that not all bugs are documented, and that the new featureas actually do not work as advertised.

Avid is still a major player. Funny is all around here it’s Avid vs FCP.
    We also have:
Premiere, M100, Vegas, DPS velocity (now Harris), Quantel stuff, Building4Media, IVSedit (and a lot more, these just popped up).
Bollywood seem full of DPS stuff, and i’ve NEVER seen any Nigerian editor around here, while Nigeria has the #3 largest film industry of the world. Don’t know what’s used there, but do you think they edit VHS?

on a scale from 1-10, how would you rate your adrenaline?
now, on a scale from 1-10, how would you rate your adrenaline based on what’s advertised as being capable of?
This is the problem… not so much that they are dragging their feet on product (and they certainly are) but thet they mislead the people who wanna buy from em.

I personally have never met anyone who was glad they spent money on adrenaline. I’d much rather have my 45k back so I can buy a sweet NLE.
