  • What’s a good camera to get to use with Sony Vegas?

Posted by John Frank on July 12, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Hey, I’m looking for a camera that I could use together with Sony Vegas, I’m guessing a Sony branded camera haha but I’m looking for one that will do decent HD, nothing too expensive say not over 700$ or so. I’m not too experinced in cameras, but I use Sony Vegas alot so I’d figured I’d ask here for a camera that would be a good combo with it.

I really have no idea about cameras, But I know a hole lot about Video Editing and such, I’m going to go research about camera right now, but for the time being any suggestions?

Best of success finding one around $700.00.

I got a Canon HF S10 and think it’s great. But it was $1100.00.

    I sure hope this helps.

The Sony HDR-CX12 is an AVCHD camera for around $700 that takes great HD footage in good light and edits well in Vegas Pro 9.0 if you have a QuadCore computer. If you don’t have a QuadCore computer I’d look for an HDV camera but you’ll need to spend at least $1000 for one.

You are asking the right question though. You can’t imagine how many people just buy any HD camera that looks good to them and then find out that they can’t edit their footage in Vegas because their camera shoots a non-standard h.264 format. Stick with a camera that shoots “industry standard” HDV or AVCHD and you should be OK.

We use the Ex1’s at work but for my home movies I use the Sony hdr-sr11 which shoots avchd and drops right into Vegas. Here’s a google link:

If it doesn’t fit the budget you might want to check out the hdr-sr10.

I have Sony Vegas Pro 11. I started with HDV in 06 with the Sony Z1 camera, and needed Vegas 7 to be able to edit it smoothly. I also bought a Dell Core Duo laptop for a little better performance. I bought a small Canon HF10 AVCHD camera in 09, and was able to edit the footage but it was jumpy. I replaced the Z1 with an NX5 AVCHD camera in 2010 and found that Vegas 8 would not handle it at all, so I upgraded to Vegas 9 and bought a new Sony i7 laptop to boot, which I now use as my main computer. I have since gotten a sports car camera which shoots H.264, and well as some still cams and a cellphone which also shoot HD video. My computer and now Vegas 11 handle all of them.
