What would be FILM resolution in AFX? Is it render settings?
Hi
For film (35mm) what resolution would my composition need to be for a title sequence? Or would I just work in 16:9 and then render this out at a larger size? Would this not cause a loss of quality though? -

There is no such thing as a definitive film resolution. It all depends on the machine that prints your images to film in the final step. The guy or facility doing this can tell you what resolution is required. Other than that there are a few standardized resolutions such as Academic, Vistavision and Academic wide, all of which have their unique settings. Try to find some info on the web e.g. at cinesite.com or arri.tv. They have some PDF’s that contain the info you need.

Like Mylenium said, find out from the guy who is actually taking your files and putting them to film. But If you are doing ONLY vector type stuff that can be re-rasterized at any resolution you can start low res. However 16:9 isn’t used in any movies. That’s a TV widescreen format. Which equates to somewhere around 1.78:1. For movies you’re probably looking at 1.85:1 or 2:35.1.
Find out what aspect ratio the film your working on will be presented in.

True, for specific frame sizes and file types you’ll need to consult with the transfer house.
But although there’s no such thing as “film resolution”, 2k is usually a good start. That means 2048 pixels wide, and then the height depends on the aspect ratio of the specific project.
But I find that most projects that I work on these days are scanned at 1920×1080, even if they’re shot on 35mm and printed to film for theatrical release.
