  • What to do before sending film to sound studio?

Posted by Dustin Orgas on March 13, 2018 at 8:17 pm

Before sending an edited film (~45 minutes, intended to be screened at festivals) to a sound designer/sound studio for mixing and/or mastering, should one mess with/work on the audio (dialogue, sound effects/foley, music) while editing (I’m using Avid)? Or do sound designers/studios prefer receiving the “raw” audio to work with? In short: does it do more harm than good, or, especially since I don’t have a lot of money to spend on post-sound, does working on the audio while editing indeed save time and money once it gets to the professional sound designers?

    Thank you so much!

Hello Dustin and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Do you know enough to improve your dialog and nat sound or will you only make things more difficult for others?

I think the best action would be to talk it over with your prospective sound designers. Some may want to work with your dialog and nat sound, others may try to work around it.

    Hello Ty,

thank you for your kind response!

That actually makes a lot of (common) sense to talk it over with the sound designers.

Since I don’t have too much money to spend on post sound, when approaching sound studios (I’m from Germany), is there anything I should look out for/keep it mind?

    Again, thank you very much!

    Hell Dustin,

Get an hourly rate and try to get a ballpark figure of what they expect the cost to be.

Have a “deal memo” in writing with what you expect of them and what you expect to do for yourself. Also add a time table and payment table. So much up front, so much halfway through (time wise) and the balance upon completion.

This would be more for music and specific sound effects, but……Do you own the rights to their work or do they? Or do they license the work to you specifically for this production., allowing them to use it elsewhere. Or, is it licensed to you exclusively and none of it may be used by them on other projects with other people?

Peter Groom on this forum might have some helpful ideas.

    Hello Ty,

I just researched “Deal Memo” after reading your answer. That would be very helpful indeed. I will have to look into the rights/license section as well.

For now I will keep editing. Once I have the picture locked I will draft a Deal Memo and approach several sound studios. At that stage I might get back to you and/or Peter Groom (thank you for recommending him).

Thank you again, and, although I don’t know a lot about sound (yet), I have to say it’s one fascinating and often underappreciated art form!

    Best,
    Dustin

Sound…yep. The best sound draws no attention to itself.
