  • What settings for very long DVD with VHS quality

Posted by Paul Gregory on April 24, 2007 at 1:15 am

I currently have a very long project that will run almost 4 hours & will be put onto a dual layer DVD. The quality of the content is very good but the content is taken from old VHS tapes & isn’t very good.

Since the originals quality is so poor I was thinking about making the DVD using setting for less than full frame PAL DVD of 720×576.

I was thinking along the lines of 352×288 & using the largest bit rate possible for that size frame. Is this a crazy idea or not? Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

I’m working almost dayly with old vhs tapes.
Sure, if you capture something from such a tape,
it does not have a real resoulution of 720*576, BUT
    it’s surely better than 352*288.
At least you can see the difference, the material
kept in 720*576 is much better seen on a TV, than
    another reduced to 352*288.

I’d recommend to keep it highres.
Don’t choose bitrate under 5Mbps, or you’ll see
    compression artifacts.

I guess that my thinking was faulty. I had supposed that if put the same amount of data into a smaller frame then the data would not need to be spread out as thinly. Apparently I was wrong.

It would have also been nice to been able to sharpen the video but I know that the sharpen tool often doesn’t produce acceptable results.

    Thanks in advance

[The Old Fart] “I know that the sharpen tool often doesn’t produce acceptable results.”

Don’t be afraid of sharpen. Just try it.
It can subjectively enhance (a bit) a blurred image.
Consider that lost information (image details)
cannot be reproduced (as seen in high-tech tv series such CSI:
they can get a high-detailed image from 4 pixels using a sharpen
tool – that’s what we can not do ;D )

When you apply sharpen, first make sure your preview window is
720*576, preview is set to best.
Look for a frame, that does not have too much movement, because
sharpen also enhances edges that are cused by movement/interlacing.
Set up the sharpen tool so.
Because of the interlace issue in preview,
render a few seconds of your video to see how it REALLY looks.

    Modify sharpen value if necessary.

    I hope i could help.
