What kind of jack should I buy? Any recs?
Posted by Noam Osband on January 21, 2020 at 11:31 pmI have two headphones with jacks that need replacement. I am looking to buy 1/8th inch replacement jacks for soldering and I’ll have to buy online since no-one near me has anything. Any recommendations? I dont know the first thing here and I imagine some brands are better than others.

January 22, 2020 at 12:43 amHello Noam and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.
Those would be plugs. Jacks are something you insert a plug into. ☺
Where in the world are you?

Thanks for teaching me. I’m in SF. I called two guitar stores who only had jacks. Not plugs. I’d love to shop local if I knew what kind of store to go to.

January 22, 2020 at 1:23 amHey Noam,
Phil just emailed me.
“Electronics Plus in San Rafael, or Al Lasher’s in Berkeley.
If there is Fry’s ( chain) nearby then try there too, but call ahead
since their stock sucks any more.”Regards,

January 26, 2020 at 8:00 amThe traditional US terminology is a male “Plug” and a female “Jack” However in UK/EU they seem to commonly use the term “jack-plug” which is very confusing to us on our side of the Pond.
But, to answer your question. My favorite source of bulk cable and connectors is an online dealer:
https://www.redco.com I have made almost all my own cables for many decades, and Redco is my preferred source for both cable and connectors. They have a very wide varety of 3.5mm (male) plugs which would be suitable for headphone cord replacement:
https://www.redco.com/Mini-3-5mm-2-5mm-Connectors/
Note that there are also 2.5mm connectors on that page, so be sure to get the right size!I prefer to use “right-angle” plugs, especially on 3.5mm headphone cords. Because the plug is so mechanically vulnerable, using a right-angle version greatly reduces the torque on the shaft of the plug when the cord in under tension.
