  • What is the proper workflow to export 5.1 from FCP7?

    Hey forum,

I have all the 5.1 files from my sound guy for a project in FCP7. Does anyone know a solid workflow for export? I know that FCP7 can’t export without making it a stereo mix, I know that it has to be sent to compressor, and I also know that the settings for the sequence have to be set in a particular way in FCP7. Are all tracks supposed to be -3db? Are the L and R supposed to be 0db, while the rest are -3db? I’ve gotten different advice. Anyone have a successful workflow?

    Thanks!
    Alex

If you setting up a 5.1 monitor in audio output setting in you sequence you can monitor and export 6 discrete channel.

GO into the Sequence Settings>Audio tab to do this.

    extending the 5.1 question further-

export that we do from FCP is basically a 6 track mono audio.

Is it dolby? how is it different from dolby?

I assume dolby 5.1 would be a single file(and not 6 mono tracks)

Exporting a 5.1 mix as discrete mono files does not give a “Dolby file”. That would be an AC-3 file.

If you want a “Dolby file”, you must take your six-discrete-channel mix to Compressor. In Compressor, there’s the “Add Surround Sound” button that you click on. You’ll get a dialog to select the mono audio file from your discrete-channel mix to assign to each channel. After hitting OK on that dialog, your surround audio is entered as the job source. You slap a “Dolby Digital Professional 5.1” preset on that and the resulting file will be the .ac3 that is often referred to as a “Dolby file”. Many parameters have a significant impact on the output result so making a copy of the preset for editing might well be necessary depending on input material and delivery specs.
