  • What is the bit depth of a dynamic link from premiere to AE?

Posted by Lewis Costin on September 4, 2014 at 5:46 am

    Hi,

Can someone tell me what is the highest bit depth the dynamic link server works at? Because I have a 16 bit png sequence which I’ve put into Premiere and then into AE via the dynamic link and the same png sequence into AE directly, put a crazy curves effect onto both and the dynamic link version has horrible banding whereas the png sequence in AE directly is nice and smooth?

Does this mean that the dynamic link is limited to 8-bit?

EDIT: I just looked at the properties for the dynamic link file and it says Millions of colors +. So that would be 8 bit with alpha. Is there any way of using Trillions of colors?

I don’t know the answer but have you set up both the premier sequence and AE comp to use 16-bit or greater depth?

Dynamic link would truly suck if limited to 8-bpp.

Thanks for the insanely fast reply.

I’m not sure how to set the bit depth on a premiere sequence? I wasn’t aware I could.

In the sequence settings you can choose something in the line of “render at maximum quality and bit depth”. It’s two seperate check-boxes.

In AE you set the project to 8 / 16 / 32 bpp.

    Nope no effect.

I believe those options are only for the preview files though.

There has to be a way surely.

What version of Creative Suite are you using?

Did you apply any effects in Premiere Pro? If so, what was the bit depth of the effects?

After enabling Maximum Bit Depth in the Premiere Pro sequence settings, save the project. Close and reopen the AE project to update the link.

What bit depth are the AE project and AE effect(s)? Is there a color space applied to the AE project?

As a comparison, try exporting a short test file from Premiere Pro as a DPX image sequence with the export settings at 48-bit Depth and Maximum Bit Depth enabled. Import to AE and apply the same effects in a 16- or 32-bit project.

Export a test file from the 16- or 32-bit AE project using a DPX image sequence with Billions of Colors enabled. Import the test file to Premiere Pro, create a sequence from the imported file, and enable Maximum Bit Depth in the sequence settings. View the sequence in the YC scope and RGB Parade to verify whether there and any gaps in the luma and RGB curves.
