What is the best way of masking on handwriting?
hi there
Basically Ive got some handwriting and I want it to look like it is being written on….what is the best way of masking it on? Ive tried to simply do a mask using points but it gets quite complicated when the handwriting goes back on it self because it then means the mask does and it looks wrong because it masks out parts which have already been masked in….if that makes sense? Anyway any tips would be much appreciated!

Put the handwriting on one layer.
Place a solid on top.
Create an open mask shape that follows the handwriting.
Add render>stroke to the mask shape.
Animate the stroke to grow from nothing to the full word. Make sure the stroke thickness covers the writing.
Set the animated stroke as alpha track matte for the handwriting layer.
Usually this leaves small issues where the writing intersects with itself, but not in the way that you describe.

I would use the write-on effect (reveal original) & maybe break up the characters into more easily maskable shapes in Photoshop first.
