  • What is a “first hold”? (freelance hire question)

Posted by Ken Bradburd on October 1, 2007 at 5:22 pm

I got a call about possible work on Friday, for this week. I asked the booker “Is this a “soft hold” (meaning that if they don’t come through with the job, they don’t owe me anything, and I’m free to take other more definite jobs).

The booker said “It’s a first hold”.

I was too embarrassed to ask, so I’m asking you… What does “first hold” mean?

    Here’s an explanation from Mograph.net:

If requesting my services for specific dates you can request to have dates set aside or put “On-Hold”. Alternatively, you can simply Book (aka “Firm” or “Buy”) the dates to assure the service/dates are reserved with no challenge.

I had no idea there were definitions for these things. I’m a little more laid back on the phone. I’m all like “so, do I put that in ink or pencil?” they get it.
