  • What happens if I progressive clips are flagged as upper field in a progressive sequence?

    Hi there,

I have been converting XDCAM clips to Prores 422 LT through MPEG streamclip. Without noticing, when I imported them into FCP it had flagged them as upperfield.
I put them in a HD sequence with field order set to none and compression set to Pro Res 422 LT.

Now from what i’ve heard from others, I cannot simply just change the field order on the clips in the browser as that wont affect the clips already in my timeline. I did find the XML work around and so I know how to fix it, via a text editor BUT..

What I wanted to know was, is there a problem with having them flagged upper field? I work off a progressive TV and I havent seen any issues, but the footage is destined for DVD later on, and I wanted to know if there will be noticeable issues on a interlaced monitor (I dont have access to one right now)

Any thoughts on what happens if its flagged as upperfield, even when it is actually progressive footage

It won’t make any difference as long as the XDCAM clips were shot progressive. Leave your sequence settings as they are.

Well it did make a difference. I got jagged edges on all straight lines, so it seems that it does make a difference. I had to use XML to change all upperfields to “none”. And this kinda fixed the problem. Though now I seem to see jagged lines on a computer monitor, but it looks aboslutely crisp on tv?

    HMMMM…

Was the original XDCAM material definitely progressive?

Do the ProRes LT clips look progressive when you play them in QuickTime?

If so, then something else seems to have gone wrong. When you say it looks good on a tv, how are you viewing it? From a DVD, direct from FCP via an i/o card, or something else?
