  • What happened to the versatility in viewing and working with my project!

Posted by Don Kimball on November 22, 2005 at 3:21 am

I am using Sony vegas movie studio DVD version. When I first downloaded the program in the layout section/story board the lowerhalf of my screen offered a composite of editing tools available for viewing simutaneously. For instance I was originally working and being able to view the mixer, trimmer, and video preview all at the same time. It was great to be able to trim a project and then instantly watch it on the video preview and use that to watch what I was doing while trimming. Now the whole lower half of my project layout storyboard area is taken up with either one or the other. For example when its time to trim the trimmer takes up the whole lower half of the screen. when its time to preview… the preview screen window takes up the whole lower half of the my project layout. I have searched in vain under the view tool bar and everywhere else I know of to return my layout to the versatility I had during the beginning but to no avail. There are tabs at the bottom of the layout where I can bring up any of these views buy clicking on them. BUT THEY WILL APPEAR ONLY ONE AT A TIME AND NOT TOGETHER on the storyboard. This is so basic to the working ease of my project and I am embarassed by the fact I am so lost here.

New and learning… the hard way…lol

    thanks!

Sounds like you’ve got them docked as tabs. This is often a good idea for Explorer, Project Media, Video FX, Transitions, Media Generators & Trimmer, as these are usually used one at a time.

The Preview window, however needs to be visible all the time, (except for audio only projects). You need to undock it using the vertical dots at top left, then move it and re-drop it so that it docks on its own further to the right. Experiment and you’ll get the hang of it.

(There are unlimited ways of setting up your space – this is just one suggestion.
Oh – and I’m asuming that the Studio version works the same as Vegas 6 in this respect.
If all else fails, you can hold Ctrl/Shift as you open Vegas and everything will revert to default.

    Good luck.

Thanks Peter! Its wonderful to have things back where they once were and I feel a lot more in control as I have learned to dock and undock and move things around to make the workspace have more of a personal touch to it! What would have taken me days to learn folks on here have helped me to learn instantaneously… this site is a dream come true… thanks heaps mate!

    That’s good Don,

Perhaps you can confirm another feature from Vegas that hopefully is also in the Studio version:

We can save up to TEN different vegas desktop arrangements and recall any one instantly –

To Save, set up the destop how you want then Ctrl/Alt D followed by the number you assign to that arrangement.

To recall desktop, Alt D followed by the number.

I use four or five regularly, including one I just love for multi track audio, which has just the Timeline filling my Dell 24″ 1920 x 1200 second monitor. So much space!!

Peter I will be away on holidays for a few days to celebrate thanksgiving but when I get back I will check that out for you.

I have been discussing an other issue with Ed and others. I tried to save my unrendered video footage with all of my text, fades and slowed down special effects etc. to a DVD with a vmf file. I burned the DVD thinking I could save everything and take it to an office comptuer and do some work there.

At the new location on the office computer I faithfully downloaded sony vegas trial version and then opened up the DVD I had saved of my original work/footage. None of the video footage was saved and I was left staring at the skeletal frames of where the video footage should have been although the text media was there.

How does one move their work in an unrendered format to another computer? I am beginning to think this is not possible with sony vegas movie studio…

any suggestions? or how is it done with the big complete version of Vegas?

    Thanks mate!

    Cheers

An easy way to do it would be to put everything on an external drive. Then you can just carry the drive to the other machine. Just make sure EVERYTHING related to that project is on the external drive.

Peter as I am new to Vegas and having so much fun! (well most of the time anyway) I discovered how to increase the voice track by using switches/normal feature.

Do you know if I can get even more specific like cutting out the sound of the idling safari vehicle and leaving in bird sound etc. in my footage?

    Thanks so much.

PS On my Safari out of 16 people almost everyone except me(Canadian were ozzie) Love ozzies mate friendly and helpful!

    Thanks again!

    Don,

If the vehicle idling is reasonably constant, there are a few ways which can be effective.

One is to use the Track EQ and reduce the frequency which covers the vehicle sound.
A little trial and error whilst playing a looped portion of the timeline helps here.
This may of course affect other parts of the audio, so little is often better than more.

Perhaps the best way is to use Noise Reduction – but this is an extra plug-in which works in either Vegas or Sound Forge. Basically you take a sample or “footprint” of the offending sound on its own then “extract” this by a variable percentage from the rest of the audio – again a little at a time is best – often a slight reduction repeated several times works better than trying to do a large reduction all at once.

The secret with any noise reduction is being careful not to unduly affect the foreground sound you are trying to keep.

    Hi Peter:

Perhaps I am doing this quite correctly…. when I perform control Alt Delete then all that happens is that task manager opens up in windows and it wants to know that task I want to end….

hmmm… not quite what I was expecting… By the way I am much more comfortable now setting up my workspace as I desire thanks to you! I was literally very limited without knowing how to move things around and to think it was that simple!

Thanks… let me know if there is some other way I can acquire the option to save different desk space setups as per your request and save it giving it a number… I think I am not doing something correctly here on movie studio +DVD

    cheers

It’s Ctrl Alt D, not Ctrl Alt Delete!

    Hi Peter:

When I hit control alt D in vegas movie maker absolutely nothing happens..
Surely I am doing that one right… lol

    PS

Will hopefully mail you a copy of my first attempt at movie making in the next several days.. Thanks again for your gracious offer to review it for me.
