Sorry a stupid question but, as in the title, what does a video proxy do and how does it help?

    Thanks,
    Ak.

A “proxy” by definition is a “stand-in” for the original. Video proxies are replacements for original video that may use a compute intensive codec with a lighter weight codec that is easier to edit with. The proxies are not the same quality and are not meant to be used in rendering a final product. They are just a temporary stand-in for the real video while editing, which implies that the original video will replace the proxies before the final render.
