What codecs are good for Vegas (mp4 not playing smothly)
Hi,
I have a Quad 3Ghz PC. I realise H264 is not designed for editing so will not play smoothly. Some guidance as to what codecs are worth considering would be good (MPEG1/MPEG2 maybe)? I am looking to do some tutorials using software that captures what happens on the screen and I want to know what codecs I should look for and what to avoid.

If you are looking to capture tutorials should should seriously consider getting Camtasia. Their codec is exceptional and built specifically for this purpose.
You want to avoid all interframe codecs. That’s any codec that uses a GOP. So MPEG is out as is MPEG4, AVC/H.264, Xvid, DivX, etc. Stick with intraframe codecs like Motion-JPEG, HuffYUV, Lagarith, etc.
If you are serious about the quality of your tutorials, just get Camtasia. It’s the industry standard for this sort of stuff.
