Our beloved d50 sony betacam is giving us a wierd artifact, the color red tends to shimmer and sparkle. we’ve isolated the problem to the camera. any ideas? it’s only the color red.

I believe this is a known fault that also affects the DSR-570s in many cases. It is caused by a faulty integrated circuit in the red channel processing. You’ll need to contact Sony Service to get it checked.

I’m hoping they have the parts because we have just been informed by Sony that the supplier of the faulty chip, in the case of the 570, no longer makes them despite Sony guaranteeing support until 2008. I’m sure they will come-up with a solution.
